The work hard, play hard ethos is never more visible than in the Sudirman Central Business District in downtown Jakarta. Sitting next to the towering office buildings are some of the city’s best eateries, shops, and nightclubs and not to mention the bustling Senopati street right next door.
In fact, things are about to get even livelier as the new Ashta at District 8 shopping mall opens tomorrow, 11th November 2020. Hypebeasts would be especially stoked to know as the French-Japanese fashion-cum-music label Maison Kitsuné is set to open their first Indonesian location at the mall.

In Japanese, the word kitsune means fox and the brand, along with their culinary sister Café Kitsuné, is instantly recognizable thanks to their fox logo. Like its older sibling, the cafe marries French cuisine with a Japanese touch and if their locations in Paris and Tokyo are any indication, you won’t want to miss their matcha lattes and cute fox-shaped biscuits.

The cafe typically leans toward quick bites but for the Jakarta location, there’s going to be several heavier meals on offer as well. It is for the better though – as Kitsuné has a history of designing some cozy spaces, we’ve little doubt the Jakarta outlet won’t follow suit.

Aside from Kitsuné, the Japanese coffee chain % Arabica is also set to make their long-awaited debut in Jakarta at the mall. As of now though, there’s still no confirmation on when they’re going to open so SCBD workers on their morning coffee run still have to look elsewhere for the time being.
Following on the footsteps of the Senayan Park Mall, Ashta also embraces an open-air concept, a welcome departure from the glut of tightly enclosed indoor shopping malls in Jakarta.

While Ashta still houses several amenities you’d expect from a shopping mall, such as the Flix Movie Cinema movie theater, it’s also quite different in atmosphere. We’re a huge fan of Ashta’s open-air concept as it’s quite literally a breath of fresh air, with plenty of open spaces for the family to enjoy.

During the day, the mall gets plenty of natural light and once you’re done with your weekly dose of retail therapy, you can take a breather at the mall’s outdoor garden area. From there, you can also spot the numerous office and residential towers of the mixed-use District 8 complex which weirdly enough, provide an interesting backdrop while you rest.
New cookie-cutter shopping malls pop up in Jakarta too often, but Ashta is differentiating itself by bringing never-before-seen-in-Indonesia cafes, and of course green spaces, to the city. We’re honestly glad we won’t have to fly off to Paris or Japan just to taste Café Kitsuné’s coffees and pastries anymore.
