Imported books are usually pretty pricey when you buy them at bookstores. So when the annual book sale, The Big Bad Wolf, returns 6th-16th March 2020, it’s an opportunity for eager readers to sweep them up at a fraction of the usual price.
Originally started in Malaysia about a decade ago to increase interest in reading and access to books, The Big Bad Wolf sale has since brought its books to over 25 cities, including Bangkok, Manila, Yangon, Seoul, Taipei, and Jakarta.

With heavily marked-down prices on many different genres of books, the Indonesian Convention Exhibition in BSD, Tangerang, is usually packed during every Big Bad Wolf sale. Even those who can’t go shopping there during the day will sacrifice their precious sleeping hours to browse through the piles of books past midnight.
Last year, children’s books at the fair were on sale from Rp. 55,000 (USD4) each and biographies were going from Rp. 80,000 (USD5.82) each, so if you’re stocking up for your family’s library, this will give you an idea of how much to budget.
Apart from children’s literature and biographies, there are sections dedicated to architecture, graphic design, fine art, music, classic literature, graphic novels, cooking, fashion, and many others.

A steady flow of books will be available thanks to the hardworking staff members who are always on their feet, pushing carts and helping customers. Your only problem might be getting overwhelmed by the sheer volume of books on offer, to the point that deciding on even one title becomes impossible.
To have a better idea of what to expect during the sale, go on Instagram to see what’s available. Check out the page’s highlighted stories regularly, so you will know how crowded it can get during certain times of the day.
The Big Bad Wolf has seen a steady increase in customers over the years, so it has also continuously worked on making book-shopping more convenient and less stressful for the waves of customers.
In case the book hunt gets a little too exhausting, there’s a 24-hour food court for you to grab a bite. Families with kids can take advantage of the children’s play area and nursery rooms. And if you’ve bought more books than you’re able to carry home – though who can blame you? – you can arrange for them to be shipped to your doorstep from the Tiki delivery service booth.

Updates are available here, so make sure you check the website as often as possible if you think it’s high time you stock up on some good reads.
