Nongsa D-Town is launched in Batam

Indonesia has been experiencing a tech boom in the past few years, and it will likely continue with the launch of Nongsa D-Town in Batam, Riau Islands.

The 62-hectare office, residential, and leisure hub is expected to better connect tech companies and talents in Indonesia and nearby Singapore and, upon completion, will have the capacity to accommodate 8,000 tech workers.

The development, designed by Singapore-based developer Surbana Jurong, was launched on Tuesday, 2nd March 2021 as an extension of Nongsa Digital Park. The existing Nongsa Digital Park currently houses around 1,000 tech talents from more than 100 companies such as Glints and R/GA.

Unsurprisingly, Nongsa D-Town will primarily be a vibrant tech hub that will create jobs for local creative and digital workers.

The development aims to nurture tech talent with training centers and startup offices, nurturing Indonesia’s growing digital economy.

At the launch event, Singapore’s Trade and Industry Minister Chan Chun Sing said that the development will be a place for tech and digital talents to “live, code, design and play.”

Nongsa Digital Park is already home to Infinite Studios, a film production company whose portfolio includes Westworld, Crazy Rich Asians, and The Night Comes For Us.

Many expect that with the development of Nongsa D-Town, more films will be produced and animated in Batam, making it Southeast Asia’s film production hub.

Even Indonesian Ambassador to Singapore Suryopratomo did not shy away from dubbing the development “Indonesia’s Hollywood”, saying that film production companies based in Nongsa D-Town will help nurture Indonesia’s film and animation talents.

A new lifestyle center

In addition to being a tech hub with office towers, co-working spaces, and state-of-the-art digital training centers, Nongsa D-Town also aims to be a new lifestyle center, with numerous hotels and shopping centers planned in the area as seen from site preview images.

The D-Town Plaza, which will be linked to Singapore by ferry, will offer event spaces and community areas, while the D-Town Link will house a commercial center with an array of restaurants and cafes as well as retail centers.

While Nongsa D-Town is still in development, there’s no doubt that once completed it will add vibrancy to Indonesia’s already booming tech and creative sector.

Creative talents will feel right at home thanks to the area’s state-of-the-art facilities and supporting environment, and we can expect more stunning work to come out of the area as a result.
