Iconic Viennetta ice cream comes back
During this long self-quarantine period, our social interactions are either extremely limited or eliminated entirely. Of course we can count on technology to talk to friends, but for a lot of us who are on our own, we might find solace in revisiting pleasant memories.
This is why the popular 90s ice cream Viennetta couldn’t have made its comeback at a better time. News of its return has made Indonesian netizens who are stuck at home all excited.
Memories of Viennetta

After many years of absence, Viennetta, an ice-cream cake distributed by Walls, is now back in the game. Compared to other cold treats typically found in mini-markets, Viennetta has always been considered one of the luxurious ones. This is why it was often reserved for special occasions such as birthdays.

Even back in its heyday in the late 1990s to early 2000s, it already cost around Rp. 30,000 (~USD1.92). In 2020, they’re priced at Rp. 50,000 (~USD3.20) each. At the present time, distribution of this beloved ice cream is still limited to certain regions in Jakarta, but since we have to stay at home anyway, it’s best to get them on one of the Indonesian online shopping websites.
No viral news without memes
The waves of nostalgia that came with the return of Viennetta might be comforting at the difficult and strange time we’re all living through.
But there’s always someone who wants to level up the fun by making memes.

For example, Instagram account @jungkatanmerch posted an “expectations vs. reality” meme, comparing the ice cream to a block of tempeh.

Keeping to the tempeh theme, another Instagram user shared a photo of the popular soy-based staple with the Viennetta box in the background, and digitally added a layer of chocolate on top to fool his followers.
Finding joy in simple things
Many of us might be at our wits’ end at this point in the quarantine, but revisiting happy childhood memories by eating ice cream might make the situation a little easier to cope with.
