Gojek & Tokopedia’s Merger Creates New “GoTo” Platform For Everything From Shopping To Transport Services

Gojek & Tokopedia merge into GoTo

Last week, Indonesians received the life-changing news that two local popular start-ups – Gojek and Tokopedia – will be merging to create an all-in-one e-commerce platform.

It was also revealed that the new company would be called GoTo and the merger, now in its final stages, is said to be worth USD18 billion or around Rp. 262.92 trillion

GoTo is said to provide services spanning everything from ride-hailing, shopping, food delivery, logistics, to online payments. Tokopedia consumers can now get more efficient delivery services, and Gojek consumers can access an even wider variety of e-commerce stores.

While consumers previously had to use Go-Pay for online payments when using Gojek, a new online payment service called Dompet Karya Anak Bangsa will be developed soon and will become the main online payment platform for GoTo.

While the merger is still being finalized, investors are already predicting the fate of GoTo, saying that Gojek and Tokopedia will be in a much stronger position to compete against local and international companies such as Shopee, Lazada, Bukalapak, and JDID

After the merger, Gojek will control 58% of the company’s shares and Tokopedia, 42%, as reported by Bloomberg. The reason for this division is yet to be disclosed. However, it is known that Gojek’s co-CEO Andre Soelistyo will lead GoTo, but the management team will include leaders from both companies including Gojek’s co-CEO Kevin Aluwi, Tokopedia’s CEO William Tanuwijaya, as well as Tokopedia’s president Patrick Cao.

The merge of Indonesia’s two biggest internet companies

For many users, Gojek was used to book transportation services and Tokopedia, for shopping, but soon consumers will be able to do it all on one application rather than using many different ones. While the launch of GoTo has not been revealed yet, we hope it will make the online experience even more seamless for users.
